Ascension Smart Smiles program returns to Milwaukee, Racine schools for free dental care

 

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Ascension Smart Smiles program is increasing access to oral care for families who are under and uninsured.

A 7th grader at Notre Dame Middle School, Kaylee Reyes, says the program has helped take away some of the back-to-school stress for her family.

"I feel happy. I haven't gone to the dentist in a while. I was thinking about that and it's okay, I can relax now," she said.

Ascension Smart Smiles works with schools in Milwaukee and Racine to bring their mobile clinic straight to the schools.

"If your child is in the MPS school system, the child will bring the letter home to you," said Dr. Charles Kosowski, Ascension senior staff dentist.

Kosowski says this program continues to fill a vital need in the community.

"Kids have enough to worry about these days. One thing we want to make their lives easier is no toothaches," said Kosowski.

Two years ago, the program expanded to Racine and has already helped more than 2,000 students at 10 schools within the Racine Unified School District.

Nearly 14,000 students received dental services through the program, at more than 100 schools across Milwaukee County in the last year alone.

"Our staff go into the schools to examine the children, let mom, dad, guardian know what the child needs, and we send a letter home to them asking for their consent so we can treat the child in the school setting," said Kosowski.

They also have families come to Outreach Community Health Center on Capitol Drive for further treatment if needed, to see the full care process through. When schools aren't in session, the mobile unit travels to provide care to adults through different community organizations.

"It levels the playing field. It allows people who are in need to get equal access. We can make that happen by going to schools, going to clinics. Going to shelters," said Kosowski.

The Ascension Smart Smiles program rolls back to Milwaukee schools starting Sept. 9.
