BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- We're getting some promising new data related to cancer survivorship. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for all cancers combined has reached 70% for people diagnosed between 2015 and 2021 here in the U.S.

A local doctor says a number of factors are contributing to this trend.

"Improvement in technology for earlier detection in screening, improvements in medical treatment, improvements in surgical treatment, and then precision medicine," said Dr. Ajay Sahajpal, oncologist at Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Hospital.

"There are so many more resources today," said cancer survivor Mary Gleason. "There are so many more resources online and other places, I wish I had had it then. It's out there if you're newly diagnosed. The survivorship program is free and available to anybody. It's the best thing ever, you'll never feel alone if you belong to that."

This Saturday, May 9, a free Cancer Survivorship Educational Health Fair will be held at the Brookfield Conference Center from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., to honor survivors, support caregivers and strengthen community.
