Attempted burglary at Texas mall mistaken as active shooter situation
(CBS8) Police in southern Texas warned of an active shooter situation unfolding at a shopping mall on Saturday, but it turned out to be a false alarm.
"Active Shooter at the McAllen Plaza Mall Stay Away from the area! Several law enforcement agencies heading to the scene," the Hidalgo County Constable's 4th precinct posted on Facebook around 1 p.m. local time.
According to CBS News, panic broke out when the sound of smashed glass caused shoppers to flee. Police were also given unfounded reports of shots fired.
Authorities from the McAllen Police Department, Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety were all on scene.
In a post shared by the City of McAllen about an hour later, Police Chief Victor Rodriguez revealed what happened.
"We are investigating a robbery attempt at a jewelry store @LaPlazaMall. All known suspects are in custody. No injuries involved," Rodriguez said. "Reports of shots fired are attributed to smashing glass cases."
Footage shared on social media claimed to show terrified people running from something with their hands over their heads.
The 1.2 million square foot mall is home to some 150 specialty stores and anchored by Dillard's and Macy's locations, among other retailers.
