Meet CBS 58’s Pet of the Week: Maddie
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Attorneys for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin are getting ready for legal challenges, even before abortions start back up at two clinics on Monday, Sept. 18.
After a 15-month hiatus, patients are now signing up for services at Milwaukee and Madison locations.
After a judge ruled in July that the state's 1849 law does not apply to consensual abortion, the organization spent two months assessing the risk of resuming services.
Marquette law professor Lisa Mazzis says they seem to be on solid ground.
"I think that the district court decision was really well reasoned," said Mazzie.
"We have, an ongoing basis, been evaluating and preparing our own legal strategy," said Michelle Velasquez with Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.
Velasquez says Planned Parenthood is already fully staffed because a lot of its employees were kept on staff and shifted to Illinois where abortions never stopped.
They expect to be back to pre-Roe levels in the next few months.
