Black Business Market highlights local entrepreneurs in Milwaukee's Bronzeville neighborhood
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Local Black-owned businesses took center stage in Bronzeville on Saturday as America's Black Holocaust Museum hosted a Black Business Market.
The museum partnered with Papyrus & Charms to showcase local entrepreneurs selling everything from art and clothing to food and skincare products.
August is National Black Business Month, and organizers said the event offered an opportunity to celebrate Milwaukee's Black entrepreneurs while encouraging people to support businesses in their community.
"Being that the museum is in historic Bronzeville, which is the culture and arts district and also at one point in time had more Black-owned businesses than anywhere else in the country, I thought it was important to highlight local businesses and give people opportunities to see what our city is made of," Lilo Allen, owner of Papyrus & Charms, said.
For Allen, hosting the market in Bronzeville carried added significance because of the neighborhood's history as a center of Black culture, arts and entrepreneurship in Milwaukee.
Those who missed Saturday's event will have more opportunities in the future. Allen and the museum regularly collaborate to host similar pop-up markets, including events tied to Women's History Month and celebrations such as Kwanzaa.
