Body cam footage shows lifesaving rescue of Wauwatosa man trapped in burning car
Wisconsin Sheriff\'s Office GERMANTOWN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Law enforcement saved a Wauwatosa man's life Tuesday morning, March 10, when he became trapped in his own car that then caught on fire while on the highway.
Officials responded to a serious crash on northbound I-41 just north of County Line Rd. in Germantown around 8 a.m. on March 10.
When officers from the Germantown Police Department arrived, they found a 40-year-old man stuck inside his vehicle with the engine compartment already fully engulfed in flames.
Newly released body camera footage shows multiple officials leaping into action, including a seven-year veteran deputy from the Washington County Wisconsin Sheriff's Office, who immediately grabbed a fire extinguisher for another off-duty firefighter who was there to help.
Officials said the driver's foot was pinned underneath a car door. Police say it took both the deputy and a Germantown police officer to free him and pull him to safety.
“In moments like this, titles and uniforms matter less than courage and teamwork. When police officers, deputies, citizens, and firefighters come together under stress with one mission—to save a life—extraordinary things happen," said Washington County Sheriff Martin R. Schulteis in a press release. "This is a powerful example of what collaboration in public safety truly looks like.”
We are still working to learn the updated condition of the driver.
