MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Businesses on Brady Street were hit hard with flooding Wednesday night after severe rain.

Most of the water has receded but the mud and debris left all around paints a picture of just how high up the sidewalks the floodwaters reached.

“The whole sidewalk was covered in water and it looked like everyone was walking in a pool. Down there, full of water. Down there full of water," said Ariel Duke, a barista at The High Crowd Cafe.

Heavy rain and water surrounded businesses as trash cans and recycling bins were swept away in the floodwaters.

“A lot of people this is scary. Scared to get in your car, scared to run your car," said Hassan Al-Dakin, the owner of Limitless Hair Studio MKE.

Al-Dakin owns a barbershop on Brady Street. He says debris covered the sewers and made it difficult for the water to drain.

“When this is closed, the water, it’s not go down. This is the most problem here," said Al-Dakin.

People we spoke with say the water was flowing so fast outside Wolski's Tavern it looked like a river.

People got to work, cleaning what they could.

“They were out there on their hands and knees trying to get the drains cleared and get the water from off the sidewalks, it was that bad," said Duke.

Now, mud and debris are all that remains, but when a street turns into a river, this neighborhood knows how to stay afloat.

“We’re thinking about starting to sell surfboards and inner tubes so we can float down the next time this happens," said Nick Olson, owner of Wolski’s Tavern.
