Brady Street area businesses hit hard by flooding

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Businesses on Brady Street were hit hard with flooding Wednesday night after severe rain.

Most of the water has receded but the mud and debris left all around paints a picture of just how high up the sidewalks the floodwaters reached.

For some business owners, Thursday morning was spent mopping up floors and getting ready to open again.

People we spoke with say the water was flowing so fast outside Wolski's Tavern it looked like a river.

Trash cans and recycling bins were swept away in the floodwaters.

On Brady Street, businesses say one of the biggest issues they faced during the flooding was covered sewers.

Several business owners say they came outside to move any debris from the sewers to help the water drain quickly.

"Yeah, I used broom, I used a stick to try to clean it," said Hassan al-dakin, owner of Limitless Hair Studio MKE.

"They were out there on their hands and knees trying to get the drains cleared and get the water from off the sidewalks," said Ariel Duke, barista at High Crowd Cafe. "It was that bad."

All throughout the morning, we’ve seen people cleaning up and helping each other.

Several businesses have their doors open and are checking in on their neighbors.

We also saw people from the Department of Public Works assessing some of the damage on the street.
