Brookfield woman who beat cancer twice surprised with Game 1 World Series tickets

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Brewers World Series run couldn’t come at a more meaningful time for one Brookfield woman.

Di Nardo

Lyndsy Di Nardo was supposed to be in the stands for the Brewers' run against the Dodgers until breast cancer surgery changed her plans.

Now, a surprise from her care team is giving her a chance to be there for one of the biggest moments in sports.

For Di Nardo, baseball has always been about more than the game. It's about the memories made with her dad.

“Going to the games and tailgating was amazing because of him,” said Di Nardo.

“Oh yeah, she loves the Brewers. She loves them,” said her son, Chase Di Nardo.

This year, the game plan changed.

“I found out less than a year ago I had thyroid cancer, so I went through that about the same time I was losing my father,” said Di Nardo.

Then came a routine mammogram.

“Less than a year later, found out that I had breast cancer. Was heartbreaking,” said Di Nardo.

In early October, Lyndsy underwent a mastectomy.

“I think it was really hard for her,” said Chase.

Her strength hasn’t gone unnoticed by her care team, so this time, her doctors had a different kind of prescription. They surprised her with tickets to see Game 1 of the World Series.

“I get to cure cancer for a living. Not any people get to say that,” said Dr. Nicole Zaremba, a health care breast surgeon at Aurora Health Care.

It’s a chance to trade the hospital room for the ballpark and cheer on the team she loves.

For Di Nardo, the best part is knowing her family is right there with her.

“I mean, I don’t think I know anybody else that would beat two different cancers in the same year and still be able to be happy and live their life,” said Chase.

There’s just one more person she wishes could be there to see it - her dad.

“He would just be so happy they’re in the World Series, so it would be amazing if he could be here for it, but I know he’s watching,” said Di Nardo.
