Businesses react as Madison protests continue after Corey Ruiz shooting
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Five days after Corey Ruiz was shot and killed by police in Madison, protesters continue to occupy space on Williamson Street as a memorial for Ruiz has grown since last week.
As protesters remain in the area, many businesses are standing in solidarity while others are concerned the continued protests will have a long-term impact on their business.
The Hair Collective sits right outside where the protest is located. Staff there said their experience with the protesters has been positive.
“Being able to be open has been really great, because we have been able to provide a place of refuge for people if they need a space for water or for using the restroom or for charging their phone or camera,” said Courtney Kulzick, a hairdresser at The Hair Collective on Williamson Street.
While Kulzick’s business has not been negatively impacted, many retailers on the block who spoke off camera said their sales are down, and some owners have even received death threats. Some said customers have told them they are scared to come to the area.
Many said the discourse online is fueling that fear, which is why Kulzick and other businesses in the area hope people will come out and experience the area firsthand.
“Instead of looking to the internet, or to Reddit or to Facebook or to Instagram for answers, they should really talk to their neighbors and see that we are all in this together,” Kulzick said. “We are feeling comfortable, but again, we are feeling the responsibility of showing up and standing up for what’s right.”
Protesters have said they will remain until they believe justice is served. Businesses say the best way people can support them is by showing up and shopping at their establishments.
