Carvd N Stone Foundation hosting free Authors of Color Book Fair in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Carvd N Stone Foundation President Nyesha Stone joined us in studio to talk about the upcoming Foundation Authors of Color Book Fair.
Families are invited to celebrate literacy, culture, and community at the event on Saturday, July 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. at McGovern Park in Milwaukee.
The free, family-friendly event will feature more than 400 free books by authors of color, valued at more than $3,000, for children, teens, and adults while supplies last.
Organizers say the event aims to increase access to diverse books while encouraging reading, storytelling, and community engagement. They hope seeing themselves reflected in books will inspire young readers, build confidence, and encourage the next generation of writers, journalists, and creators.
Although this is the first Authors of Color Book Fair hosted by the Carvd N Stone Foundation, the organization has been working to expand access to diverse books for years. The initiative began with an Authors of Color Book Drive in 2019, before the nonprofit was established, and has since grown into a larger community celebration.
In addition to free books, attendees can enjoy:
- Children's reading sessions
- An interactive writing experience for adults
- A live performance by Genesis Renji
- Free horse rides from the Milwaukee Buffalo Soldiers
- Music from DJ DripSweat celebrating Black artists across generations
- A free snack bar
The Carvd N Stone Foundation says its mission builds on the work of the Carvd N Stone newsroom by turning positive storytelling into community action through literacy initiatives, scholarships, mentorship, career development, and other programming.
The Authors of Color Book Fair is presented in partnership with the Milwaukee Parks Foundation. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome!
