CBS 58 Hometowns: Old World Third Street

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee is a city steeped in history, with numerous neighborhoods boasting distinct pasts that paint a vivid portrait of its evolution. One such iconic area is Old World Third Street, a gem that reflects the city's rich heritage and dynamic present, and it is the subject of this week's 58 Hometowns tour.

The area offers glimpses of Victorian commercial architecture dating back to 1855, and secured its spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and the State Register of Historic Places in 1989. Not just a relic of the past, Old World Third Street on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive blends history with modern entertainment.

Jessob Reisbeck will offer viewers an in-depth look at this fascinating district during the CBS 58 news at 4:55, 9 and 10 p.m. Highlights include the iconic 3rd St. Market Hall, which welcomed Milwaukeeans back in Jan. 2022, the historic Usinger's with its tales of the Usinger family and insights from the Milwaukee Historical Society.

To kick off the exploration of this piece of Milwaukee's tapestry was Claire Koenig, senior director of communications and public affairs, with VISIT Milwaukee, who joined us to kick off the 58 Hometowns fun on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Meanwhile, Michael Schlesinger is showcasing what is known as "Milwaukee's local pub:" LP - MKE! The restaurant, just blocks away from Fiserv Forum, opened in the summer, and is known for its scratch-made pub fare.

There are several plays on words involved: LP can mean a record, as the location was once a music store, and LP is also short for local pub.

There are a lot of handhelds, including a smash-style burger, po'boys and a fried green tomato BLT. There's also a weekend brunch. The address is 1137 N. MLK, Jr. Drive near downtown Milwaukee.
