CBS 58's Hometown Athlete: Green Bay's Jon Winker finds purpose in racing, wants other vets to follow

CBS 58

GREEN BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- "Honestly, early on, I never really, like, was a huge racing fan," Jon Winker says.

As a kid, Winker didn't have a passion for racing. Now, it fuels him.

"That's where kind of the whole Resilience Racing thing came from, was to allow me to kind of give back to veterans and show them motosport, which is inherently kind of a hard industry to get into," Winker says. "You know, when I got in the car, it melts a lot of things away in your mind. So, I mean, I dealt with a lot of pain during my recovery. And I found that when I got in the car, all that stuff kind of just went away."

Winker was injured serving in Iraq.

"So, the driver must have lost sight of me," Winker recalls. "I turned my back to the vehicle. And the next thing I know, I am on the ground with the vehicle actually riding up my left leg."

Later, Baycom in Green Bay, and Owner's Edge in Waukesha helped him recover and thrive.

"The mission of Resilience Racing, where we're trying to make it accessible for individuals with disabilities," Winker says.

Now he wants other disabled vets to experience the thrill and joy he has with hand-controlled race cars.

"Baycom and Owner's Edge gave me a second chance and believed in me. I built a career. Started a family. And now race hand-controlled race cars to support other vets," Winker says. "It's an American dream. Just not a version that I expected."
