GREEN BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- From winning a Super Bowl to hosting the NFL Draft, there isn't enough time to list everything Mark Murphy accomplished as president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers. As he prepares to be inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame, Murphy knows none of it is possible without the fans.
“Every team in the league says they have the best fans, but I think the Packers, we’re the only team that can say that and actually know that it's true," Murphy said.
Fans were a huge focus during Murphy's 17 seasons leading the organization. That's why he built up Titletown, calling it a great addition for the entire community. It's also why he started Packers Everywhere, which lists more than 1,500 Packers bars and fan clubs all over the world, connecting fans and organizing pep rallies before road games.
“It's a way to connect. There’s nothing more fun than traveling to an away game, having the game wrapped up and have all of the Packers fans move down to the front," Murphy said. "Our fans are just phenomenal."
Other NFL teams have called Murphy to ask about Packers Everywhere, but he says it simply can't be replicated without the phenomenal support the team receives. On the field, the highlight of Murphy's tenure was Super Bowl 45, Green Bay's last championship.
"Really fun to see the whole team come together and play, play great football," Murphy said. "That was a pretty special year."
Murphy has quite the legacy. The former safety won a title with Washington, too, and is believed to be the only person to win the Super Bowl as a chief executive and a player. But the legacy he says he'd like to be remembered for is leaving the Packers in a better place than he found them.
