83-year-old woman dies after head-on crash in Caledonia

CALEDONIA, Wis. (CBS 58) — An 83-year-old woman died after a head-on crash on State Highway 31 in Caledonia on Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities responded around 3 p.m. to Highway 31 south of Five Mile Road for a report of a head-on collision.

A preliminary investigation found that a 77-year-old Mount Pleasant man was driving south on Highway 31 when he crossed into the northbound lanes and collided with another vehicle, according to the Caledonia Police Department.

The northbound vehicle was driven by a 65-year-old Caledonia woman. An 83-year-old Caledonia woman and a 3-year-old child from Oak Creek were passengers in the vehicle.

The 77-year-old man suffered critical injuries and was flown by Flight for Life to a local hospital. Police said he remains in critical condition.

The 65-year-old woman, 83-year-old woman and 3-year-old child were also taken by ambulance to local hospitals for injuries suffered in the crash.

Police later announced that the 83-year-old woman died from her injuries.

Because of the number of people injured, the Caledonia Fire Department received assistance from the Racine and Oak Creek fire departments.

The Caledonia Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact investigators.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who are affected by this tragic incident," the department said.
