CBS 58's Hometown Athlete: Matt Murray patrols the net for the Admirals
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Admirals have a long history of dominance in net.
Pekka Rinne is a borderline Hall of Famer. Juuse Saros, Devin Cooley and Yaroslav Askarov are all starting in the NHL this season. As Scott Grodsky tells us, Matt Murray might be the next Admiral on that list.
Matt Murray led the AHL in save percentage and wins last season. For an encore, the 27-year-old goalie is near the top of most statistical leaderboards again.
"I've been feeling good, feeling capable," Murray said. "The guys in front have been doing a pretty good job too, improving every week. It's been a pretty good start so far."
Murray has been a model of consistency with Milwaukee, but that wasn't always the case. When he joined the Admirals, he had just finished the worst season of his career with the Texas Stars, needing to work on the mental aspect of his game as much as the physical.
"I think the biggest thing is the old saying: don't sweat the small stuff," Murray said. "Things are not going to go your way sometimes and just making sure that things don't compile into big issues."
"I just see a more mature game. I think mentally, he's worked a lot on his mental side of his game," said head coach Karl Taylor. "He's worked on how he handles adversity. Even though he's doing well and going in the right direction, we still think we want to get him to a level that says, I'm one of the best goalies in this league, I'm too good for this league. Get me to the NHL now."
The NHL is the long-term goal, and Murray isn't far away. He's made four starts with the Dallas Stars, even getting a shutout in one of them.
And when the Predators went to Sweden last month, they brought Murray with, giving him more experience so that when his number is called for a full-time role, he'll be ready.
