MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is helping Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) expand their lead screening.

The agency recently awarded the City of Milwaukee Health Department nearly $400,000 to expand screenings. The health department and MPS will use the grant to host a series of school-based clinics across the district throughout the year.

Next week, the CDC will travel to Milwaukee to meet with partners and observe a clinic in action.

“Protecting children’s health is one of the most important responsibilities we have at the City,” Mayor Cavalier Johnson said in a statement Friday. “This CDC-supported screening effort reflects the work Milwaukee has done over the past year to respond, learn, and move forward. By bringing screening directly into schools, we’re making it easier for families to access testing and ensuring we stay focused on prevention, transparency, and long-term safety.”

The next screening clinic will be held Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Keefe Avenue School. In-school testing will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and community testing runs from 2 p.m.- 5 p.m. The clinic is free to all MPS students.
