Cedarburg family on the road to recovery after barn explosion injures 2 people, including a Jackson police lieutenant
CEDARBURG, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A family in Cedarburg is facing a long road to recovery after a barn explosion severely burned a father, son, and their dog.
With his tail wagging, Jasper doesn’t hesitate to make a run for it. He's ready to go home. It's a reunion that brings a smile and a little relief after a weekend that held very little of either.
“I’m sorry. It’s just so, it’s so good he’s okay,” said Christa Mueller.
On Saturday, the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office says an accidental barn explosion in the town of Cedarburg severely injured 82-year-old Karl Foeger and his son, Jackson Police Lt. Michael Foeger.
“Just still kind of in shock. Happy Jasper’s coming home but still long road for my dad and brother,” said Casey Foeger, Karl’s son and Mike’s brother.
Despite the severe burns on his body after the explosion, Mike sprang into action.
“He’d give the shirt off his back for anyone that needed help and he’s just a really good person,” said Chief Ryan Vossekuil with the Jackson Police Department. “Mike was able to somehow walk to a neighbor's house and ask them to call for help. And ask them to call for help.”
Jasper was also in the barn.
“First responders everywhere and they were still putting the fire out in the barn, so I was kind of yelling at them “anyone see a dog? Anyone seen a dog?” said Foeger. “Burned and his nose was raw.”
With Jasper headed home, the Foeger family says they’re celebrating.
“Without Mike and Jasper in the house, it feels empty, at least knowing Jasper’s coming home now,” said Mueller, Mike’s partner.
They’re waiting patiently for Mike and Karl to return home from the hospital, for a proper family reunion.
“They both love him and yeah, they are Jasper’s favorite people so he will be very happy when they come home,” said Mueller.
The Fraternal Order of Police Kettle Moraine Lodge #10 has created a fundraiser to help support the Foeger family during this incredibly difficult time.
