'It's really shocking': 6 children found locked in Milwaukee storage unit
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a child abuse and neglect case after six children were found inside a storage unit early Tuesday, Sept. 16 near 27th Street and Silver Spring.
Officers responded at about 1:36 a.m. to a report of children locked in the unit. Inside, they found a 2-month-old, along with children ages 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9.
No injuries were reported.
Police say a 26-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were taken into custody. Charges will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
"It's quiet so it's really shocking. I'm glad they're safe," said Talisha Anderson. Everyday, she visits her mother who lives across the street from the units. She said when she heard the news, she "couldn't believe it." Anderson had asked her mom if she had heard anything at night, and she was told no, that it was quiet.
Another neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous told our crews that she had seen kids running around the lots for months, but didn't think anything of it. "The run around in the back. One day I saw them walking, the whole family... but I just feel sorry for them," she said.
Anderson was surprised the StorSafe manager hadn't seen this, since there are multiple cameras around the facilities.
The investigation is ongoing, and police said this is the only information available at this time.
A CBS58 crew on scene saw MPD and a Forensics Unit driving in and out of the lots repeatedly around noon.
