Milwaukee Common Council votes in favor of plan to build new juvenile correctional facility

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's Common Council voted Tuesday in favor of a development plan to build a juvenile correctional facility near 76th and Good Hope Road.

The Department of Corrections proposed changing the property on W. Clinton from "industrial light" to "detailed planned development" in order to build a juvenile detention center.

It's part of the state's plan to close troubled youth prisons Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake and build smaller juvenile facilities around the state.

The new youth prison would have a maximum of 32 beds and provide a shuttle service for visiting families.

There wasn't much debate on the topic before approval, but three Common Council members did request to be excluded from the vote.
