GERMANTOWN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 19-year-old man has been charged in a crash that killed a Germantown woman in August.
Javonte Spikes faces the following charges:
- Vehicle operator flee/elude officer resulting in the death of another
- Vehicle operator flee/elude officer resulting in great bodily harm
- Homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle
- Reckless driving causing great bodily harm
According to a criminal complaint, Germantown police attempted to perform a traffic stop for a suspended vehicle registration just before 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 9.
The suspect vehicle began to accelerate, fleeing officers at a speed "well in excess of 100 miles per hour" in a 35 mile per hour zone on Donges Bay Road.
The complaint says the vehicle did not stop at the stop sign at Donges Bay and Division Road, proceeding through the intersection at a high rate of speed. When the pursuing officer reached the area, he found that the vehicle had crashed and was on fire.
Prosecutors say three occupants were trapped within the vehicle, including the driver, who was later identified as Javonte Spikes. Spikes was flown via Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital, and a back seat passenger was taken to Children's Wisconsin for treatment.
The front seat passenger of the vehicle, identified as 19-year-old Samantha Recore, died of her injuries at the scene.
The Washington County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the cause of death as multiple injuries.
Detectives reviewed body worn and squad footage, as well as radio communications, and found that the pursuit covered a distance of 1.12 miles over a period of 41 seconds.
Court records show Spikes had an initial court appearance Friday, Sept. 6, where cash bond was set at $100,000.
His next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 30.
