MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- An arrest led to a driver taking off with a police officer inside the vehicle.

According to the criminal complaint, officers attempted to take Kewane Daniels into custody on two outstanding warrants in a hotel parking lot. Officers were in the parking lot of a Comfort Suites on Silver Spring Drive when Officer Pope stood behind the open rear passenger door of Daniels’ car.

Investigators say Daniels put the car in reverse, forcing Officer Pope to backpedal. Fearing he would be knocked down and run over, the complaint says Pope jumped into the back seat.

Investigators say Daniels drove out of the parking lot and headed east on Silver Spring Drive, reaching speeds near 90 miles per hour. Police say Daniels weaved through traffic and mounted the curb multiple times as Officer Pope ordered him to stop.

According to police, the child safety locks prevented the officer from leaving the vehicle. Investigators say Officer Pope drew his gun at one point, then put it away to de-escalate the situation.

During a court intake hearing, Judge Barry Phillips said, “Now he puts his gun away, he’s going to try a different technique to convince you your life is not in danger, my gun is away please stop. And you allegedly jumped out of the car leaving this cop in the back seat.”

The incident ended when Daniels jumped out of the vehicle while it moved at about 35 miles per hour. The vehicle crashed, and officers rescued Officer Pope.

Police reported no serious injuries.

Judge Phillips said Daniels did not deserve bail because his actions put people at risk, but he set bail at $100,000 cash.

Daniels faces multiple felony charges.
