Cooler temperatures look to stay for the rest of August

NOW: Cooler temperatures look to stay for the rest of August
NEXT:

Today will mark 4 straight days with highs only making it to the 70s. The average high for today sits at 80 degrees. After a stretch of warmer and particularly humid weather we are feeling and seeing the pattern switch. The last two days have had a real Fall look with the soupy gray clouds and along with the cool temps and breeze make it's hard to ignore fall is right around the corner.

Even though highs are only in the lower 70s today, it was even cooler on this date last year. The high temperature only reached 69 in Milwaukee last year on this date. But the signal for cooler air to continue throughout the rest of August looks strong.

So what can we expect? Despite average highs at 79-80 degrees for the rest of the month and a high probability for cooler than normal temperatures we may not need to bust out the fall sweaters just yet. Looking back over the last 12 years it's actually quite rare to find a day held up in the 60s in August. Furthermore, looking back to records since they started in 1871, you will only find 3 days where highs stayed in the 50s in August.

For the most recent 30-year average, two days only reaching the 60s for highs in August is normal. While we don't have any 60s on the horizon, there's a few days we are forecasting highs at 71 so it will be a close call and surely a sign that the summer season is beginning to wane.
