MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A rainbow-colored ribbon was cut Friday morning at a brand-new Milwaukee salon. It's called the Courage+ Salon, and its operators tell us it's more than just a place to get your hair done.

"Right now, we are facing a lot of uncertainty, and with uncertainty, we need safer, more affirming spaces in order for young people to feel seen, feel affirmed and feel confident," stylist and director of services, Rob Thomas, said.

He tells us the Courage+ Salon is designed to meet the needs of the LGBTQ+ community and people seeking a gender-affirming environment, as well as young people and families in the foster care system.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson spoke at Friday's grand opening. He calls the salon a place of healing.

"It's a place where individuals, especially youth who are LGBTQ+, the residents who are LGBTQ+, foster families, those who've experienced trauma, can walk through the doors and know right off the bat that they belong," Mayor Johnson said.

The Courage+ Salon is located near 10th and Greenfield. Friday's ribbon cutting was followed by an open house, which lasts until 8 p.m.
