Dems rally in Waukesha against Musk's influence on Wisconsin Supreme Court race
WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The balance of the state Supreme Court will be determined in less than three weeks, as liberal Susan Crawford and conservative Brad Schimel square off.
On Thursday, March 13, more than 100 democrats gathered in Waukesha to rally against Elon Musk's influence in both that race and the federal government.
A record $59 million has been poured into the race, and both candidates are benefitting from the contributions of billionaires.
At Thursday's town hall, democrats vented about how Musk's decisions are impacting them, and how his money could impact the state.
Ellen Langler told us she was concerned with "The cutting, the arbitrary cutting of the government jobs."
Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler told us, "I think there's a deep sense of betrayal and fury about it across the country."
Retired teacher Dale Morgan vented concerns about gutting the Department of Education, saying, "It's especially going to affect those children who are most in need of help."
USPS employee Scott Schepp is concerned with the privatization of the post office. He said, "I'm going to tell you it will go downhill fast."
And VA employee Marie Brown worries about cuts to the federal workforce. She said, "They're all worried about losing their jobs. So, this all does affect real people."
Musk's influence is also being felt in the state Supreme Court race.
Political groups tied to Musk have contributed millions of dollars that have gone to Schimel's campaign.
The election will determine if Musk's influence in Wisconsin is enough to win, but many are already feeling the effects of his decisions in Washington.
Van Evans is a US veteran who encouraged people at the rally, "Just do something besides scroll on those phones and feel bad for our country. It's ours. It's ours. Let's improve it."
We did reach out to the state Republican party for an interview, but they did not respond.
