MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development is recommending people who may have been recently laid off or furloughed due to the coronavirus apply for unemployment insurance benefits online

Some of the information you will need to have when applying include: a username and password for filing online, a valid email or phone number, your social security number, your Wisconsin driver's license or identification number and work history for the last 18 months.

"Because this is an unprecedented event, we would just like people to know that we are doing the best that we can, but please have some additional patience as we're trying to work through our challenges as well and trying to get everybody the services they need," said Emily Savard, Program and Policy Analyst with the Unemployment Insurance Division.

The Department of Workforce Development's website also has a section for frequently asked questions about the coronavirus and Wisconsin unemployment benefits.

The DWD is keeping some of their job centers open across the state to help people looking for jobs and employers. Some sites have closed because of their co-location in technical colleges or with organizations that have decided to close.

Those looking for a job can use JobCenterofWisconsin.com to update resumes, search for jobs, create a budget, review labor market information or use any of the other employment-related tools.
