Deputy unintentionally discharges weapon after responding to fight at Sherman Park

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department were called to Sherman Park for a reported fight on Thursday, May 23. 

It happened around 7:34 p.m. 

According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, additional information focused on three men, two of whom were reportedly armed with a long gun and a handgun. 

Deputy sheriffs responded to Sherman Park and three men fled on foot. Deputies pursued them on foot. Two of the men were caught and taken into custody.

During the foot pursuit, a resident adjacent to the park reported a male, one of the three who fled on foot, in his yard.

While drawing his service weapon to approach the man in the resident's yard, a deputy sergeant unintentionally discharged his weapon into the ground adjacent to his own foot. 

No one was injured by the discharge, according to authorities. 

The man in the resident's yard was taken into custody as well. 

The deputy was placed on administrative duty, pending an internal investigation.
