MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Discovery World's Girls and STEM event is all about inspiring the next generation of women in STEM.

"It makes me want to become an astrophysicist even more," said Genevieve Salowitz, an aspiring astrophysicist.

For nine-year-old Genevieve, being in a room full of women who share a passion for science makes her confident she can achieve her dreams.

"I kind of just want to develop some new theories about black holes and like and get some new ideas in," said Salowitz.

Discovery World's annual event continues to inspire young girls into pursuing a career in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

"When you see yourself in the person across the table who's leading you through this activity, you feel connected," said Meghan Langmyer, with Discovery World. "You feel like this is something I can do in the future."

More than 20 organizations came together, creating interactive activities for kids to get hands on experience. Each showcased in different ways all STEM world has to offer.

"It's great for kids to get hands on experience because then they see it's actually fun and it's not the math you have to do in school that’s like a chore," said Ruth Dobberpuhl, a senior engineering student at MSOE. "This is like actually they can see it come to life and it's fun to do."

Dobberpuhl was once an aspiring engineer and now her dreams are becoming reality. She's graduating from MSOE this spring and secured the job she always wanted.

"I'm building robotic cells," said Dobberpuhl. "It's exactly what I wanted to do, which is really exciting. Definitely I would encourage anyone that is curious about engineering to learn about it. It's doable. It’s a lot of fun too."

Her advice to those wanting to follow in her footsteps?

"Go for it," said Dobberpuhl. "It's not going to be easy, but it's worth it. It's kind of intimidating. Theres not a lot of women in engineering, but you have a leg up because you think differently and you can kind of bring your own creative aspects and how you think to the field and we need more women in engineering."
