Driver was 'blacked out' before hit-and-run crash that left woman dead, another injured
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 34-year-old Milwaukee woman has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman and injured another.
Police say the incident happened shortly before midnight Saturday, Sept. 22. A speeding driver hit 20-year-old Talise Dunmore and her 23-year-old sister, De-Lisha, as they crossed the street near 76th and Good Hope.
Talise did not survive.
Investigators believe 34-year-old Stephanie Sykes was behind the wheel of the speeding vehicle. Sykes left the scene of the crash but was arrested a short time later.
According to a criminal complaint, Sykes was not able to complete a field sobriety test, and officials collected a blood sample. It was determined Sykes' blood alcohol content was .081.
Court records show Sykes has been convicted of OWI four times previously. She is restricted from operating a vehicle with an alcohol level more than .02. The restriction was in effect until 2031.
When investigators interviewed Sykes, she admitted she was "blacked out." She reportedly told officials she was drinking beer and double shots of tequila before the crash. Sykes told officials she only recalled being in a car and her car was damaged.
Sykes has been charged with the following:
- Homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle while having prior intoxicant-related conviction/revocation
- Homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle with a PAC while having prior intoxicant-related conviction
- Hit-and-run - resulting in death
