Early voting kicks off in Wisconsin ahead of general election
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Election Day may be two weeks away, but voters don’t have to wait to cast their ballots.
Early voting kicked off at 11 locations across the City of Milwaukee Tuesday, Oct. 20.
“It’s important to use your democratic power,” said Jaime Mendez, an early voter.
“The weather is perfect. It’s very nice out and there’s no reason not to come down,” said Denise Koss. “I came first thing this morning to vote early."
Voters can register, review a sample ballot, or drop off completed absentee ballots at any of the early voting locations. Voters will need to show an acceptable photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport when voting by in-person absentee.
“Seeing so many people in line, seeing people in there voting right now, it always feels good. I always like to see people participating so I’m excited about it,” said Lafayette Crump, an early voter and commissioner of city development.
A coalition of local faith leaders also held a rally outside the Zeidler Municipal Building to encourage people to vote.
“We have to hold the government accountable, and we need to have some accountability,” said Mendez.
Voters can also return absentee ballots at any dropbox throughout the city. Some early voters included city officials.
“There’s a possibility I’ll be helping with the election and it’s a great opportunity to make sure I’m able to cast my vote, regardless of what happens day of,” said Crump.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission says it expects more than 2.6 million Wisconsinites to cast their ballots for this election.
“You can’t complain if you don’t vote. You have to let your voice be heard,” said Koss.
Early voting runs through Nov. 1. Election Day is Nov. 3.
