Election Day is Nov. 3 — what you need to know before going to the polls

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- With polls opening in less than 24 hours, civil rights and nonpartisan organizations are working to make sure eligible voters know their rights.

For some voters, getting to the polls can be a challenge, but organizations say that shouldn't keep anyone from casting their ballot.

"They can call a number, and they can get a free ride to the polls," said Darryl Morin, the national president for Forward Latino.

Faith-based, civil rights and nonpartisan groups held a press conference Monday afternoon, Nov. 2, to remind voters across Wisconsin that there are resources available.

"Every eligible voter deserves the right to vote without fear or intimidation," said Pastor Greg Lewis, with Fight for Our Lives.

Advocates are also encouraging voters to plan ahead, including knowing where to vote, bringing a valid photo ID, and staying in line if they arrive before polls close.

"If you’re in line by 8 p.m., stay in line," said Bianca Shaw, founder of Boost Progress Alliance. "Make a plan for somebody else, too.”

The Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) says it's been preparing for this day.

"The Wisconsin Election Commission has been preparing and training clerks for this day as they do for every election," said Mark Thomsen with the WEC.

Voters who need to register on Election Day must bring proof of residence showing their current Wisconsin address.

"Our elections are fair, with integrity, without fraud," said Thomsen.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
