MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers has announced a new initiative to connect recently fired federal workers with open positions in Wisconsin.

The Wednesday, March 26 announcement includes the launch of an online portal and a series of virtual job fairs coordinated by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. The effort follows widespread recent terminations across multiple federal agencies.

Evers initially publicly discussed the idea on Tuesday, March 4 when he told reporters that his office planned to offer displaced federal workers positions in Wisconsin state government.

The portal allows job seekers to browse public sector openings, research career paths, apply for unemployment benefits and access dislocated worker services.

Eight virtual job fairs are scheduled for April, each focused on a high-demand sector. On Wednesday, April 9, healthcare jobs will be featured from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by information technology from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. On Thursday, April 10, law enforcement, corrections and public safety roles will be highlighted from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by science and research from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

On Tuesday, April 15, engineering positions will be covered from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and social services from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The final day, Wednesday, April 16, will feature maintenance and mechanical careers from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and finance and accounting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
