MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and with Gov. Tony Evers declaring 2023 "The Year of Mental Health," it is particularly significant this year.
During an interview on Monday, May 1, Dr. Tyler Rickers, DO, shared insights on supporting loved ones struggling with mental illness. Dr. Rickers serves as the Medical Director of the Depression Recovery program in Oconomowoc.
He emphasized the importance of asking, listening, acknowledging, making a plan and sharing the weight when helping someone in need. Dr. Rickers also addressed the rising youth mental health crisis, citing a CDC report that found high levels of sadness and suicidal thoughts among teenagers.
