MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Police confirm the victim is a 71-year-old man.
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Friday, Oct.14 one person died after a fire at a condominium complex in Milwaukee.
The fire took place near 76th and West Heather Avenue just after 10am.
Police told CBS 58 News, when they arrived on scene, they found a body that was unrecognizable.
When crews arrived on scene they were met with heavy smoke and active flames from inside a unit, calling all hands on deck.
"It would have been a full alarm, so you would have gotten four engines two trucks and a rescue," said Assistant Fire Dr. Dewayne Smoots of the Chief Milwaukee Fire Dept.
It was a new scene for community members here at Servite Woods condominium complex, fire trucks and police cars lining their driveways.
"At first I thought it might have been a shooting," said Brenda Thompson long time resident of the complex.
The fire is thought to have originated in the living room.
"We quickly got the fire under control, and unfortunately, we couldn’t save the person," said Smoot.
This fire comes as the nation recognizes fire prevention week.
"Check the batteries if you have one (smoke detector), push the button, make sure that it works," said Smoots.
Prevention measures neighbors are taking heed of in this small community.
"Danger, because you can't smell CO2, so it's only dedicated by the sensor, so it's very important he understands that," said Shawn Young, resident of Servite Woods home.
No one else was home when the fire started.
The Medical Examiner's office told CBS 58 News an autopsy will take place Monday, Oct. 17.
