MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --- An unborn baby is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Milwaukee Thursday afternoon.

Police say the shooting occurred during a police pursuit of a stolen vehicle involved in two armed carjackings. The chase started near 17th and Vliet and ended on I-43 near Keefe Avenue when the suspect vehicle entered construction lanes.

Police say the driver did not listen to commands and attempted to flee again before an officer shot into the vehicle, injuring two people.

The Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression is reacting to the incident and demanding police footage be released.

Standard operating procedure does not allow for this, but outreach chair Alan Chavoya says something needs to be done about police initiation of reckless car chases.

"It leads to a lot of questions by the community, by us...questions that we demand answered about what unfolded and why it is that a police officer decided to unload a clip into a packed vehicle," he said.

DOT video from I-43 shows the moments before police opened fire on the vehicle. You can see it moving through the construction zone before getting blocked by a cement truck. At another angle, you can see officers running towards the scene.

Everyone in the car was between the ages of 15 and 18. Calvin Jeans says his son, Calveyon, and his son's pregnant girlfriend, were shot. The unborn baby did not survive.

He says he knows police were investigating a crime but that it shouldn't have escalated to this point.

"They have came and apprehended my son multiple times. It's always been peaceful. Why this time it couldn't be peaceful when my son was here, and it couldn't have been peaceful," he said. He feels police should have ended the chase sooner.

The teens who were shot are in critical condition, but all involved have been arrested, according to police.

Chief Norman did not say if the suspects shot at officers but that a gun was recovered from the vehicle.
