Pick 'n Save donates $37,000 worth of food to Feeding America after truck mishap
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Tuesday morning was busy at Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, for a very good reason.
An unexpected event led to a major donation that will help our communities.
"It's normal that Pick 'n Save donates food to us, but it's not normal how it came to us," said Scott Marshall with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.
The special start to the food bank's new year came after a delivery mishap to a Pick 'n Save grocery store last week.
"One of the trucks in the inclement weather had skidded off the road or slipped off the road," said Emilie Williamson, Pick 'n Save's corporate affairs manager.
That truck was carrying 14 pallets of food for a daily store delivery.
The driver was okay, but a new truck of products was quickly sent out.
Of course, Pick 'n Save didn't want to waste tons of quality food.
"Getting that to Feeding America, where they can send it to homes in our community, is the right answer for this situation," Williamson said.
First thing Tuesday morning, volunteers filled the Milwaukee Feeding America warehouse to unload the truck.
The 14 pallets of food weighed more than 10,000 lbs. - a donation worth more than $37,000.
"It's really great to see the kind of food that can be breakfast, lunch, and dinner for families in our community, being delivered to us out of the blue," Marshall said.
Feeding America says this January drop-off will be especially helpful, as most people tend to donate during Thanksgiving or Christmas.
"A donation that comes at this time after the holidays actually is an even bigger deal than if it happened before the turn of the year," Marshall said. "This food is going to be doing a lot of good very quickly in the community."
