Feeling like fall this week but still mostly above average
Both days over the weekend recorded highs in the 70s, even the upper 70s! Sunday's high might be a bit deceiving since it happened just after midnight before a cold front came through an held temps in the 60s the rest of the day. But officially it was enough to add two more days to our days at/above 70 degrees this year putting us at 140 days. That is just 10 days away from the record and still more warmth to go!
The warm September and mild start to October has also increased our average temperature for the year which now sits at 55.6 degrees which is just a tenth behind 2012 for the warmest start to the year on record. But remember that 2023 ended up as the warmest year on record even though by this point of the year they were in 4th place and nearly a full degree behind 2012, so still some time to go!
Temperatures were chilly to kick off Monday morning. In fact we saw some patchy frost in a few of our western counties where lows dropped into the middle 30s. It was the coldest morning of the season since June 11th!
The chilly start to the day comes at a time of year when we start to see lows in the low 30s. The average date for the first freeze in our western counties is right now but inland areas and lakeside communities don't typically get to 32 degrees until the end of October. Northern Wisconsin didn't see their first freeze until the beginning of October so the chill is a little later than usual this year.
But temperatures will warm nicely throughout Monday with highs in the mid 60s Monday then upper 60s Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. And no, that 81 on Friday is not a type but we only get one day of that warmth before cooling down into the 60s again this weekend.
After a windy weekend with gusts reaching close to 40 mph at times, we see the wind really die down with wind speeds from 5-15 mph Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The wind likely increases for the end of the week with our whiplash temps.
