Final push for candidates in race for governor on last day of early voting
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — On the last day of early voting for the August primary in Wisconsin, candidates made their way across the state, aiming to appeal to voters.
State Rep. Francesca Hong is the current frontrunner in the Democratic primary based on recent polling. She spent Sunday canvassing in Waukesha and Kenosha.
Hong has received national attention over a 2020 tweet calling to "cancel Thanksgiving." She addressed her controversial social media posts at the canvassing event.
“I had some bad takes, hot takes on Twitter, like all, everyday Wisconsinities; I had to express my frustrations that the system wasn’t working for us. Our campaign has always been about the people. Our campaign has always been about the issues, and more importantly, the solutions we are presenting.”
Gov. Tony Evers held a rally with Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley in Madison on Sunday. The current governor said he believes Crowley is the candidate who can beat the likely nominee Tom Tiffany in November.
“Between now and Tuesday night, I need you to contact at least 5 friends you know, no matter where they live in Wisconsin, what party they belong to, or who they... who you think they are voting for, and tell them why you're voting for David and ask them to do this as well."
Despite polling in the single digits with voters, former Evers cabinet secretary Joel Brennan was also out canvassing in Milwaukee on Sunday.
“We’ve been running around the clock, in my case, for the last 9 months. And it’s closing time,” Brennan said.
