'Find what your limits are': Milwaukee hosts Six Days in the Dome
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Over 120 runners from all over the world are set to run the 443.45-meter track at the Pettit National Ice Center for the Six Days in the Dome series of races.
Six Days in the Dome is a series of races that can span up to six days, said Mike Melton, who is the co-race director.
"We run a series of races. We do 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours or six days," said Melton.
Melton said the event welcomes two types of runners: Those who are there to challenge themselves and those who are there to make records.
"It qualifies as a race that would get you a performance that would allow you to make the U.S National team or to set some kind of record," said Melton.
The dedication of the runners is at an all-time high, all sleeping or napping around the track to make their commute to the course quicker.
For avid runner Nicolae Bucainu, originally from Romania, it's all part of testing his limits.
"I'm looking for a new challenge. The challenge, it was to spend six days on the track 443 meters mentally," said Bucainu.
For runners who've done the race several times, like Tatsunori Suzuki from Japan, it's about the atmosphere.
"This race, the temperature is stable, humidity is stable and just simple running, running, running," said Suzuki.
For runners like 60-year-old Juli Aistars from Wauconda, Illinois, it's about the friendships.
"It makes me feel like a kid again. The social comradery is great. We all help each other. It's more about that than the running," said Aistars.
The event started on Sunday, June 18 and will continue until June 24. The Pettit National Ice Center is expecting over 120 runners throughout the coming days.
