'Fire Safety for Seniors' program launches in South Milwaukee

SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The South Milwaukee Fire Dept. has initiated a "Fire Safety for Seniors" program.

According to a press release on Tuesday, Sept. 12, the program aims to provide senior citizens with free, lighter-weight fire extinguishers. The initiative was launched in response to a kitchen fire involving an elderly resident who had difficulty using a standard fire extinguisher.

Interested senior citizens may submit a request for the lighter extinguishers through the Fire Department's website or by calling (414) 768-8191.

South Milwaukee Mayor Jim Shelenske stated in the press release, "I am proud of this innovative idea that addresses a need in our community. Thanks to this program, our seniors will be safer."

Earlier this summer, another program aimed at seniors was held at Marquette Manor to distribute 75 fire extinguishers within the senior living community.
