Francesca Hong holds campaign rally with U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, controversial streamer Hasan Piker in South Milwaukee
SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) — State Rep. Francesca Hong, the front-runner in the Democratic race for Wisconsin governor, held a campaign rally Sunday, Aug. 2, featuring speeches from prominent figures in the progressive movement.
Hong, a democratic socialist leading the latest Marquette Law School Poll, was joined by U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and left-wing political commentator and streamer Hasan Piker.
While addressing the crowd at South Milwaukee High School, Hong acknowledged the recent momentum behind her campaign.
"When people want to fight for something together, when they see something they believe in and they start to believe in one another, I think the Dems are going to have to write a new playbook here," Hong said.
Piker has drawn scrutiny from across the political spectrum over comments the popular streamer has made about the Israel-Hamas war.
U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, the likely Republican nominee for governor, criticized Omar on social media Sunday.
Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes ended his campaign for Wisconsin governor Thursday, July 30. He was in second place behind Hong in the most recent Marquette Law School Poll.
Omar and Piker pledged their support for Hong as she entered the final nine days before the Aug. 11 Democratic primary.
