Free program helps people support others through the power of art
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- It's not a new idea, using art to heal, but it certainly seems to help.
And Wednesday, Feb. 11, a new program based on the concept was launched in Brookfield.
It's called "Art for a Cause," an art class for people with empathy for others.
At the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center Wednesday, CBS 58 saw participants creating what are described as "sentimental art pieces." For examples, sympathy cards.
Those pieces will be given to people and families who have been affected by substance abuse or substance-related loss.
"We do recognize that creative expression can be a very low-pressure way to connect and support one another in the community," said social worker Stephanie Engle.
The art classes are free and happens once a month. Anyone can sign up.
"it's fun to come make art and increase your artistic ability, but it's even more special to make art and then share and give to someone else," said participant Erica Wilkinson.
