Frosty start to the weekend but even colder for Saturday morning
It was a frosty start to the weekend Friday morning with low temps ranging anywhere from 32 to 36 degrees. Some areas saw a patchy freeze in western counties.
The threshold for frost to form is typically 36 degrees or colder along with a light wind and clear sky. We did have a lot of wind this morning so that may have prevented too much frost from happening, but in Milwaukee it was the first temp at 36 degrees or colder for the season. Our first frost this year in Milwaukee came weeks later than average. Typically, around this time of year we would be talking about the first hard freeze when lows drop into the upper 20s.
This was one of the latest first frosts in Milwaukee's recorded weather history. Hitting 36 degrees for the first time on November 6th ties with 1940 and 1900 as the second latest on record. The record latest first frost was November 12, 2016 when we saw both our first frost and first freeze.
Saturday morning will likely be even colder. Clouds clearing out faster and a lighter wind should allow lows to drop into the upper 20s inland and low 30s lakeside. Milwaukee could potentially see its first freeze of the season and inland areas could get a killing freeze.
More frosty conditions are expected Sunday morning as well. Lows will get a little warmer for the start of next week but, at times, inland communities could see patchy frost in the 30s.
In addition to the cold mornings, the afternoon Friday will be chilly as well. Highs will only warm into the mid 40s and with wind gusts as high as 30 mph, it will feel more like the upper 30s. Friday will likely be the first day since the middle of May that our high temperature doesn't hit 50 degrees. The last time we saw highs stay in the 40s was back on May 11 when we topped out at 48. Our streak of days with highs of at least 50 degrees is at 179 which is the tenth longest on record.
