Fundraiser at Kegel's Inn this Saturday will support West Allis ice rink
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- West Allis Winter Week is the perfect time to explore everything downtown has to offer. The city is also home to one of the oldest authentic German spots.
"We've seen a huge decline in German restaurants throughout the years, and we're one of the holdouts that really digs into the community to help it support itself," said Julian Kegel.
It may be frosty outside, but things are heating up inside Bootleggers Alley right outside of Kegel's Inn. A huge tent allows them to offer an outdoor beer garden even in these colder winter months. This weekend is Frosty Funnies. There will be a magician, s'mores, hot cocoa and raffles for families starting at 5 a.m.
The event is a fundraiser to support the Liberty Heights Park Ice Rink.
"I own the ice rink, and I donate it to the park," said Kegel. The updated ice rink will include a year-round synthetic ice rink. This year, the ice rink is under construction with a new community center for passing out skates and keeping warm during the ice skating months.
It's all free to families thanks to the help of the Liberty Heights Neighborhood Association.
"They've gotten hundreds of skates donated to them, they get hot chocolate and s'mores donated, so that's every night that they're open," said Kegel. "Theres a volunteer there ... making sure the operation on the ice rink is a success for kids."
The new rink is expected to be open by next winter.
