MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- In the not-so-distant future, motorists could see butter-themed license plates on the roadways.

Gov. Tony Evers proposed creating a butter yellow special license plate in his state budget as car owners continue to show interest in creative, unique plates.

There are currently no designs of what the plate would look like, but the administration said it would have a yellow background to resemble butter.

It comes amid a craze for "blackout" plates that include black background and white lettering in other states. Evers also proposed funding the development of black and white license plates in addition to the butter-themed in his budget.

Rep. Paul Melotik, R-Grafton, introduced legislation last session that would create a throwback design for "blackout" plates.

Officials said the design is popular in several other states, including Minnesota and Iowa, which Melotik called their "most popular" plate.

The Department of Transportation offers dozens of special license plates that often costs motorists an annual $25 fee. That money can generate millions of dollars to the state's transportation fund.

Evers also proposed spending $14.8 million to replace old license plates as upwards to a million cars are still driving on the roads with plates 20 years old, according to DOT estimates in 2023.

The DOT worked with lawmakers to bring back a law that requires the state to automatically replace plates that are 10 years or older by 2032. The investment would help reach that goal.
