WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Governor Tony Evers continues to take a stand against President Donald Trump's agenda.

The governor announced Wisconsin will be joining a multi-state lawsuit after the Trump administration said it plans to cut all federal grants towards AmeriCorps programs.

Twenty-five AmeriCorps programs are currently operating within Serve Wisconsin's portfolio, which is our state's AmeriCorps agency created by former Governor Tommy Thompson.

The funded initiatives include math and literacy programs, recovery services, and conservation projects.

"These grants were awarded last summer," said Jeanne Duffy, Serve Wisconsin. "They began on Aug. 15. So, we've been eight months into the program here. We only had four months left. I mean, I suppose it was naive, but I did not think they would cut grants at this stage."

“Once again, the Trump Administration is trying to cut federal funding that Congress already approved and Wisconsin is counting on to help kids, families, and communities across our state—all so they can pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires,” said Gov. Evers. “These latest reckless Trump and Musk cuts will hurt Wisconsin’s kids who are homeless or who need tutors for math and reading, folks who are working to overcome addiction and substance use, stop work on conservation projects, as well as all of the dedicated public servants whose livelihoods are depending on this work. While Republicans in Congress may be fine staying silent as the Trump Administration unilaterally tries to cut federal funding approved by Congress, I will not. We’re going to sue to stop them.”

According to the press release, the official lawsuit could be filed as early as today, April 29.
