Greenfield driver charged in fatal Milwaukee pedestrian crash

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 24-year-old woman from Greenfield has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian on Thursday, July 11 in Milwaukee. The crash occurred near N. Swan and W. Hampton.

Alma Espino faces two felony counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Monday, July 15, she was driving under the influence with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.163%, higher than Wisconsin's driving limit of 0.08%.

The criminal complaint states that Espino's car was traveling south on N. Swan when it left the roadway, struck a fence and then hit a pedestrian who was standing at a bus stop. After hitting the victim, the car flipped multiple times and collided with several other cars.

The struck pedestrian suffered a severe head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers at the scene reported that Espino appeared intoxicated. They noted she had glossy eyes, dilated pupils and emitted an odor of alcohol. Open cans of Crown Royal Peach Tea Whisky were found in her car.

The complaint notes eyewitnesses reporting seeing Espino's car driving erratically before the crash.

One witness, who was driving one of the struck vehicles, described the car as a gray Toyota Camry traveling at a high rate of speed. Another witness, who was standing at a nearby bus stop, reportedly saw the vehicle mount the sidewalk and hit the pedestrian before flipping and hitting other cars.

Espino reportedly told officers that she may have remembered running into a pole, but not a person or other cars.

She was arrested and performed field sobriety tests, where officials say she displayed signs of impairment. Her preliminary court hearing is scheduled for Friday, July 26.
