Greenfield woman charged with reckless homicide in connection to fatal stabbing makes initial court appearance
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 29-year-old Greenfield woman went through court on homicide charges Saturday, Jan. 31.
Police say they responded to her address early Wednesday morning and found 32-year-old Equanis Salinas unconscious, suffering from a stab wound.
Salinas later died at the hospital.
Britney Morris, 29, has been charged with second degree reckless homicide and use of a dangerous weapon. In court Saturday, prosecutors read part of the criminal complaint which states Morris and Salinas got into a fight.
Morris was allegedly strangled, but she got away and grabbed a knife.
The victim locked himself in a room and Morris stabbed the door 17 times.
When Salinas opened the door, Morris stabbed him in the chest.
Morris's attorney argued in court Saturday that she acted in self-defense.
The defense said Morris was trying to get her belongings in that room because her belongings were in there and she wanted to take her four-year-old daughter away from the situation who was also there.
The commissioner set a cash bond at $75,000, agreeing with the state's request.
Morris will be back in court for her preliminary hearing on Feb. 6.
She faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
