GREENFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Minnesota couple is asking the Milwaukee community to keep an eye out for their young dog, Franklin, who fled from the scene Tuesday night in Greenfield after they were involved in a bad crash.

Sarah and Sean Kern were on a road trip going to Ohio when they decided to stop in Milwaukee, with both Franklin and their other dog, Eleanor.

The four were heading east on I-894 near Loomis Road when they were suddenly rear-ended hard.

"We didn't see it coming at all," Sarah Kern told CBS 58's Ellie Nakamoto-White. "Our vehicle spun and rolled numerous times. We hit a sign on the side of the road and then we rolled up the bank on the side of the highway."

Their car was totaled, but thankfully both of the Kerns walked away with just scratches and minor injuries.

"We just bounced around a lot in the car until it came to rest and then we had to crawl out," said Sean Kern. "We're kinda banged up, Sarah's a little more bruised up than me."

However, both dogs ran. Eleanor was later found by a paramedic.

"But Franklin is still missing," Sarah Kern said. "We've been canvassing the area, we put flyers up. We've got posts everywhere. He means the world to us, and we really need him to come home."

Franklin is a three-year-old Yorkie and Dachshund mix with brown, tan, cream and black coloring. He may have on a black harness with reflective edging, and he is microchipped.

"He is our biggest protector; he is always looking out for us. He loves chasing squirrels in the yard, hanging out with his siblings," Sarah Kern said. "It's by the grace of God that we're standing here and that Eleanor is alive and that somebody saw Franklin running from the scene, so I think he's alive, I know he's out there, we just need him returned home. I just need one more miracle."

The couple said they are now planning to stay in Milwaukee for as long as they can in hopes that Franklin is found.

If spotted, do not approach and instead call police, MADACC or the Kerns' number -- (320) 260-6035. You can also email [email protected].
