’Heartbreaking’: Former Rufus King and Wisconsin Badger football player Nate White dies

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Nate White, a former football player at Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, died on Wednesday morning, June 25, according to the Brookings Police Department.

White graduated from Rufus King in 2023 and spent two years on the University of Wisconsin football team before transferring to South Dakota State at the beginning of 2025.

Jackson Powers was roommates with White at South Dakota State and has spent the last six months getting to know him.

“I look over at him in the stretch lines and he's not there, it's really just heartbreaking," Powers said. "That was my brother and it’s like everything just vanished.”

As a junior at Rufus King, White was named the Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

“I know he didn’t see himself as outgoing or outspoken, but he was a leader by example and he just brought the best out of everybody and I wish I could let him know that," Power said.

Wiscosin Football released a statement on social media platforms on Wednesday, saying "We remember Nate as a friend and teammate and we stand in support of Nate's family and loved ones."
