MT. PLEASANT - The South Shore Fire Department responded to the Racine Architect Hotel located at 7111 Washington Avenue in Mount Pleasant around 10:30 p.m. last night. There were reports of an activated fire alarm.
Hotel occupants were evacuating when the fire department arrived on scene. South Shore Fire crews found no smoke or visible fire. Upon entering the building, they found smoke in the 1st-floor lobby that was becoming progressively worse. After a short search, they found an active fire was burning in the elevator machinery room located on the 1st floor. The fire was quickly brought under control.
No injuries were reported and the fire does not appear to be suspicious at this time. Occupants were allowed back in later that night.
